How to Get to Expo '70 Park, Suita

Expo '70 Commemorative Park is reached on the Osaka Monorail, which is not a JR line. Get off at Bampaku-kinen-koen and walk about five minutes to the Central Gate. From Senri-Chuo the ride takes 6 minutes and costs 250 yen; from Osaka Itami Airport it runs direct in 17 minutes for 380 yen.

Which station do I get off at?

Bampaku-kinen-koen for the Central Gate, the Tower of the Sun and EXPOCITY. Koen-Higashiguchi for the East Gate, the athletics stadium and the football stadium. Both are about a five-minute walk, so if one exit is congested the other is no further away.

Both stations are on the Osaka Monorail. Koen-Higashiguchi is on the Saito branch line, so check which branch your train takes.

How do I get there from Umeda, Shin-Osaka or the airport?

From Umeda or Shin-Osaka, ride the Midosuji subway north to Senri-Chuo, then change to the monorail for 6 minutes. From Osaka Itami Airport the monorail runs direct with no transfer at all — a route most visitors miss because they assume they must go through central Osaka first.

Does a Japan Rail Pass work on this route?

No. The Osaka Monorail is the only railway that reaches the park, and it is a separate private company, not part of JR. A Japan Rail Pass will get you to Osaka but not the final leg. The Hankyu lines and Kita-Osaka Kyuko are not JR either.

This is the single most common mistake visitors make on the way to Expo Park. Budget for the monorail fare separately, or use an IC card.

Can I pay with a foreign credit card?

At the ticket gates, yes. The Osaka Monorail accepts contactless tap payment with an overseas card at every station, so you can go straight through without buying a ticket. The ticket vending machines, by contrast, take cash only — they do not accept cards at all.

How much is admission, and when is the park closed?

Admission to the Natural and Cultural Gardens and the Japanese Garden is 450 yen for high-school age and above, and free for junior-high age and younger. The park opens 9:30 to 17:00 and is closed on Wednesdays. Turning up on a Wednesday is the second most common mistake here.

Where can I leave my luggage?

There are coin lockers inside the gates at both Bampaku-kinen-koen and Koen-Higashiguchi stations, costing roughly 200 to 700 yen a day depending on size. One thing to know in advance: the lockers at Bampaku-kinen-koen take IC-card payment only, not coins.

If you are arriving from the airport with a suitcase and no IC card, load one at the ticket machine before you look for a locker at Bampaku-kinen-koen — those lockers will not take your coins.

What if I drive?

The park has several car parks, all on the same tariff, and they are noticeably cheaper on weekdays. Two hours costs 410 yen on a weekday and 620 yen at the weekend, with a 24-hour cap of 1,100 and 1,600 yen respectively. Motorcycles are 210 yen a day.

Ordinary car rates. Each car park serves a different gate — the central car park is about five minutes' walk from the Central Gate.

FAQ

Is the Osaka Monorail a JR line?

No. It is operated by Osaka Monorail Co., a separate company. A Japan Rail Pass does not cover it, and neither the Hankyu lines nor Kita-Osaka Kyuko are JR either.

Is Expo '70 Commemorative Park the same place as Expo 2025?

No. This park was built for the 1970 World Exposition and is in Suita, northern Osaka. Expo 2025 was held on Yumeshima, an island in Osaka Bay roughly 25 km away.

Is the Osaka Wheel running?

Not at the moment. The official site shows the wheel suspended following damage from a lightning strike, and no reopening date has been announced. Do not build a visit around it without checking the official site first.

Do children have to pay to enter the park?

No. Park admission is free for junior-high-school age and younger. On the monorail, children aged 6 to 11 pay half the adult fare and under-6s travel free when accompanied, up to two children per fare-paying adult.

How long does it take from Umeda?

Roughly 30 to 35 minutes door to door: the Midosuji subway north to Senri-Chuo, then a 6-minute monorail ride, then a 5-minute walk to the Central Gate.
